progress to talk about. we don't know if nancy pelosi will be speaking later on today at noon. we know president obama will be speaking. does this misstep that we were just talking about, does it hurt? is this just mcconnell really just trying to get his say into this process? >> you know, richard, i don't think so. i actually think senator mcconnell's proposal was a pretty good one regardless of who is president. president obama or then governor romney. the notion that this country every 12, 14 month is going to have this hostage taking by congress over a debt ceiling is not a way to run, you know, the largest enterprise in the world, the united states government. there's nothing in the constitution that talks about a debt ceiling. this has become kind of in the past a pro forma process that has now turned into a financial armageddon each time it comes about and i do think granting the president these additional rights and then allowing congress with a two-thirds vote to say, hold on here, that might be a more appropriate way regardless of who is the president is. but i don't think ye

couple of minutes. he and the president are barely speaking. on the left, minority lead nancy pelosi who took speaker boehner to school yesterday, telling him to figure it out. moments ago, she called on the house gop to stay on the hill and keep working. >> here we are, 18 days from a possible fiscal cliff, hopefully not. 12 days until christmas. and here we are, once again, having a two-day work week, in the congress of the united states. you have to ask the question, why are we going home instead of working very hard to forge an agreement to avoid that fiscal cliff? >> and on the right, republicans who accused the president of wanting to take the plunge in order to achieve his objective number one. >> he'll probably eventually get his tax increases one way or another. he's going to get his wish. i believe we'll be raising taxes not just on the top earner. everyone is going to pay taxes next year in this country and i think that's what the president wants. >> and the center in the balance. the american economy, fed chair ben bernanke warning that the stalemate over the cliff is already

have you with me right now. as we speak, house minority leader nancy pelosi is giving her briefing this morning. weep put that up for everybody to see. when we talk about where we are in the staging of all of this, all the drama, the back and forth, the clock ticking, americans truly watching this, you think that the house would be in session today but you all closed up house day early, streamed out yesterday in a walkout. what gives? how do you explain this to the american people when they expect you should be at work trying to resolve this? >> i'm not sure you would call it a walkout. we're waiting for the president to act. we have laid something on the table and we continue to be stalemated by the president and his administration. i am so disappointed that the treasury, geithner, said yesterday they're willing to go off the fiscal cliff and they're notle to negotiate and put something on the table. we've put a good faith effort on the table and you know what, the president is the leatheaet lead. i expect him to be in washington rather than out campaigning. the campaigning is ove

minority leader nancy pelosi highlighted the diversity of the committee chairs on the democratic side of the house, women and minorities well represented there. last week republicans were lambasted for appointing all white nearly all male committee chairs. has the republican party learned the lessons from the election or do they risk paying the price in the next one? >> well, thomas, forget about the committee chairs. i think the diversity and inclusion and outreach, i think it begins at the grassroots level and i've been pretty critical and vocal over the last two or three weeks and i think that every single republican in this country ought to be concerned about what's happened to us in the last two election cycles in the presidential race, and we lost with every -- we have lost with every demographic out there except for white men and i've been saying for 20 years that we've got to do a better job with nontraditional constituencies and we can't expect to have diversity in our committee chairs when we've got our republican party chairman that i don't know, that i don't have a relationsh

. the president was here, but there were meetings yesterday. nancy pelosi came in and out. no one saw her. we thought reading the tea leaves maybe there would be some movement. there was some movement. the president is playing golf. haven't seen hide nor hair of john boehner. >> mike viqueira, thank you, good sir. for more insight into where all of this is headed and whether there could be a breakthrough, i'd like to bring in david jackson, white house reporter for "usa today," and the politics writer for "roll call." appreciate your time. david, what's your sense right now? how far apart are the two sides? >> i think they're closer than a lot of people think because as mike just mentioned the dispute the size of the tax increase on the wealthy. both sides have said they want to negotiate what that rate may be. as far as the republicans are concerned, they want more commitment from the white house for spending cuts particularly on entitlement programs like social security and medicare. one thing mike talked about the fact we haven't heard much from any of these guys the last few d
